Engine (a.k.a. “pumper”)

Definition: basic firefighting apparatus assigned to every station that responds to all types of rescues, fires and medical calls; carries a water supply and hose

• Primary Roles: placement of hose lines to supply water for rescue, fire extinguishment, exposure protection, patient evaluation and stabilization on medical calls
• Water Carried: 1000 gallons, plus 25 – 50 gallons Class A or B foam
• Equipment Carried: medical equipment (including automatic defibrillator), 1500 gallon-per-minute fire pump, and hose, hydraulic rescue tool for vehicle accidents and water rescue gear, generator, thermal imaging camera
• Amount of Hose Carried: 1000-1200 feet of 5-inch hose, 800 feet of 3-inch hose, one 100-foot 1-3/4 inch front bumper hose line, two 200-foot 1-3/4 inch crosslays, two 150-foot of 1-3/4 inch hose (Skid Load), 150-foot booster reel hose line, 100-foot high-rise pack, 150-foot 1-inch Wildland hose
• Staffing: 3-4 firefighters (1-Lieutenant, 1-Driver Engineer, 1 or 2-Firefighter)
• Number in Department: 5 (E1, E2, E3, E4 and E5)

Quint

• Definition: something of a hybrid vehicle with capabilities of both an engine and a ladder. A quint is smaller than a ladder truck, which allows for better access in restricted space, but still carries water like an engine and has a 75-foot aerial ladder
• Primary Roles: dependant on conditions at time of arrival; may function as an engine company or truck company; may conduct two operations simultaneously. Forcible entry, search and rescue, assist with evacuation, ventilation of structure, placement of ladders, check for fire extension, salvage, overhaul, placement of elevated water streams, secure structure
• Water Carried: 400 gallons, plus 25 gallons Class A foam
• Equipment Carried: 75-foot aerial ladder, 1500 gallon-per-minute fire pump, hydraulic rescue tool for vehicle extrication, forcible entry tools, generator and other rescue equipment, thermal imaging camera
• Amount of Hose Carried: 1000 feet of 5-inch hose, 600 feet of 3-inch hose, one 100-foot 1-3/4 inch  front bumper hose line, two 200-foot of 1-3/4 inch crosslays, two 150-foot of 1-3/4 inch hose (Skid Load), 100-foot high-rise pack, 150-foot 1-inch Wildland hose

Truck (a.k.a. “Hook & Ladder”, “Ladder”, “Truck”, or “Aerial”)

• Definition: an apparatus that is larger than an engine, quint and mounted with a 75-foot to 100-foot aerial ladder (straight stick or platform ladder)
• Primary Roles: Forcible entry, search and rescue, assist with evacuation, ventilation of structure, placement of ladders, check for fire extension, salvage, overhaul, placement of elevated water streams, secure structure; also backs up engines on medical calls
• Water Carried: 300 gallons, plus 25 gallons Class A foam
• Equipment Carried: 100-foot platform aerial ladder, 1500 gallon-per-minute fire pump, hydraulic rescue tool for vehicle extrication, forcible entry tools, generator and other rescue equipment, thermal imaging camera
• Amount of Hose Carried: 1000 feet of 5-inch hose, 600 feet of 3-inch hose, one 100-foot 1-3/4 inch  front bumper hose line, two 200-foot of 1-3/4 inch crosslays, two 150-foot of 1-3/4 inch hose (Skid Load), 100-foot high-rise pack, 150-foot 1-inch Wildland hose

Rescue

• Definition: a vehicle that responds to medical calls, rescue alarms and structure fires
• Primary Roles: to provide specialized rescue capabilities and light the fireground when appropriate, and cut off utilities at fires
• Water Carried: none
• Equipment Carried: high-powered lighting including a light tower, rescue tools, technical rescue equipment, water rescue equipment, dive gear, ventilation fan, and assorted hand tools
• Staffing: 2 (1-Lieutenant, 1- Driver Engineer)

Brush Truck (Type 4, “Wildland Engine”)

• Definition: four-wheel drive vehicle used for county response and to carry water into remote areas or rough terrain that engines cannot access
• Primary Role: to reach fires that are located off-road and difficult to access such as brush and grass fires and structure fires
• Water Carried: 750 gallons, plus 25 gallons of Class B foam and 10 gallons of Class A foam
• Equipment Carried: wildland firefighting hand tools, 250 gallon-per-minute fire pump
• Amount of Hose Carried: 1500 feet of 3-inch hose, two 150-foot of 1-3/4 inch crosslays, two 150-foot of 1-3/4 inch hose (Skid Load), 150-foot booster reel hoseline
• Staffing: Not Staffed – Engine Co. or Quint/Truck Co. personnel will respond this unit

Squad

• Definition: four-wheel drive vehicle used for county response and to carry water into remote areas or rough terrain that engines cannot access a vehicle with most of the same capabilities as a traditional engine/pumper that is smaller in size and easier to maneuver; can respond  grass fires, medical calls, and other calls
• Primary Role: to reach fires that are located off-road and difficult to access such as brush and grass fires and structure fires
• Water Carried: 250 gallons, plus 25 gallons of Class A foam
• Equipment Carried: wildland firefighting hand tools, 250 gallon-per-minute fire pump
• Amount of Hose Carried: 1500 feet of 3-inch hose, two 150-foot of 1-3/4 inch crosslays, two 150-foot of 1-3/4 inch hose (Skid Load), 150-foot booster reel hoseline
• Staffing: Not Staffed – Engine Co. or Truck Co. personnel will respond this unit

Water Tender / Tanker

• Definition: a vehicle that carries a large supply of water used when there is inadequate city water supply, especially in remote areas
• Primary Role: to provide an additional water supply

• Equipment Carried: 2,500 gallon portable tank, float-a-pump, 10 gallons Class A foam, 250 gallon-per-minute fire pump

• Definition: a vehicle that responds rescue alarms and structure fires and oversees the call at the Incident Commander
• Primary Roles: Responds as the Incident Commander and sets up a command post. Where the Incident Commander and Command Staff function and where those in charge of emergency units report to be breifed on their respective assignments
